Calvert Hall Upsets Southwestern

February 18, 1994|By From staff reports

Unranked Calvert Hall (16-10) defeated visiting No. 2 Southwestern, 58-55, yesterday in a nonleague game. Brian Taylor led the Cardinals with 22 points and Tarvar Witherspoon added 13.

The Sabers (13-4) missed a chance to tie the game with six seconds left when a three-point shot rolled out of the rim, and they didn't get off another shot.

Donnie Joy led Southwestern with 16 points. Haywood Eaddy, who scored 28 points in a 83-74 loss to No. 1 Southern Wednesday, finished with four points as he missed the fourth quarter with an ankle injury. The Sabers committed 25 turnovers.

"We've been playing well the last week or so, and we knew coming into this game that we had to play well," said Calvert Hall coach Mark Amatucci, whose team led by as many as 20 points. "My guys had a hard practice the day before the game and we withstood their fourth-quarter comeback."
