A 23-month-old Gambrills boy was critically injured yesterday when the Suzuki Sidekick his mother was driving skidded on ice and careened into a tree on Route 450, county police said.

Francis Granito, who lives on Branchwood Terrace, was flown by MedEvac helicopter to the D.C. Children's Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, said Officer Terry Crowe, a spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Police Department.

The child sustained head injuries when the car crashed into the tree. The collision smashed in the front door on the passenger side where the boy was seated, Officer Crowe said.

The accident occurred at 7:50 a.m. when the boy's mother, 40-year-old Cynthia Granito, was driving west along Route 450 on a curve just past Hermitage Hills Drive, Officer Crowe reported.
