YMCA offers many spring programs

The Carroll County Family YMCA is offering a variety of programs for its spring session from Feb. 28 to April 24.

All programs will be at the Westminster facility on Route 32 unless otherwise noted.

The following aquatic programs are available:

* Lifeguard training for those 16 and older who can pass a swimming test. Community CPR and first aid are required prior to taking this $75 course. Membership not required.

* Swimming lessons for groups and individuals for an eight-week session. Fees are $30 for groups, $96 for private and $80 for semiprivate lessons. Registration begins Monday.

* Arthritis Foundation YMCA Aquatic program for those with arthritis. The program is from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost is free for YMCA members and $50 for nonmembers.

* Aqua fitness, aerobic exercise in a heated swimming pool. No swimming skills required. The program runs from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays or from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Free for members; baby-sitting available.

* YMCA scuba program runs from 6:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays and 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays Feb. 28 to April 6. The cost is $180.

* Swim Fit, an aquatic fitness program. Participants must be able to swim freestyle, using proper breathing techniques.

Child care programs available include:

* Preschool program for ages 2 to 5 years, both part and full time. Fees range from $168 to $423 per month.

* Extended kindergarten for children in Robert Moton and Friendship Valley Elementary schools. The YMCA will transport the children to and from school. Fees range from $125 to $297 per month.

* Chipmunks, for children 2 to 4 years old, at Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster. Fees range from $38 to $86 per month, plus $30 registration fee.

* School Age Child Care before and after school at Freedom, Carrolltowne, Robert Moton and Mount Airy elementary schools.

The following fitness programs are available:

* AeroDance, a one-hour total body workout professionally choreographed. Classes are at 9 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Eldersburg. The cost is $50 for two times a week and $60 for three times a week.

* Step-up, fitness using an adjustable step. Morning and evening classes are available.

* Body toning, a one-hour class for intensive muscle toning using Dyna-bands for upper body workout. Classes are at 9:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 10:15 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the YMCA and are free with membership. Other classes are at 10 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Eldersburg.

* Totally Fit is a one-hour complete body workout offered at 6:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at Freedom Elementary School in Eldersburg. The cost is $60 for nonmembers.

* Aerobics for Mom is a program for pre- and postnatal women given in conjunction with Carroll County General Hospital. An orientation meeting at the hospital and medical clearance form are required prior to taking class.

Session I is March 1-24 and Session II is March 29-April 21. The program is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the YMCA. The cost is $15 for YMCA members and $30 for nonmembers.

L Youth, family and adult activity programs available include:

* Tae Kwon Do for men, women and children age 8 and up. Classes will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from Feb. 28 to April 20. Youth classes are from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. and adult classes are 7:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. The cost is $30 for members and $40 for nonmembers.

* Family Fun Nights is a monthly activity for the whole family. The next event is Spring Fling on March 25.

* Youth Baseball for boys and girls ages 5 to 9 begins April 2 for eight weeks on Saturdays. Registration ends March 21. Children 5 to 6 meet from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and children 7 to 9 meet from 11 a.m. to noon.

The program is free for family members, $10 for youth members and $40 for nonmembers. A coaches' organizational meeting will be at 7 p.m. March 30.

* Teen Leaders Club for 13- to 16-year-olds to learn athletic skills, coaching, teaching, human relations, public speaking and community service. The club is from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mondays. Contact the Youth Services Director for details.

* Summer Day Camp offers several groups for boys and girls: Camp Beaver Run (grades 1-5), Y's Guys (grades 1-5), Computer Camp (ages 12-16), Adventure Camp (grades 6-9), Leader's Camp (grades 6-11). Sessions are one to two weeks.

Camp sign-up day is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 12 at the YMCA and Carrolltown Center. Call for dates, times, locations and cost.

* Adult Fitness Assessments for people 18 and up are offered from 12:30 to 3 p.m. March 5. Health screening forms must be completed by Feb. 26. Free to members.
