A 24-year-old Randallstown man was shot to death yesterday afternoon behind the former Bedford elementary school, near the Milford Mill Metro stop.

Baltimore County police said residents of Bedford Road behind the school, which is closed, called police at 3:06 p.m. after hearing gunshots coming from the school property.

Detectives who arrived shortly afterward found Shawn Keith Holmes, of the 4100 block of Dutch Mill Road, on the ground about 100 feet from an abandoned Nissan Pathfinder, said Sgt. Stephen Doarnberger, a police spokesman.

Mr. Holmes had been shot in the upper body, Sergeant Doarnberger said, but detectives did not know last night how many times. Why he was shot remained unclear.

Sergeant Doarnberger said Mr. Holmes apparently drove to the school with several other men before the shooting began. Witnesses saw three young men, one wearing a tan ski suit, running from the area after the shooting.

The Nissan belonged to Mr. Holmes' girlfriend, the sergeant said.

The shooting drew a small group to the scene from the normally quiet neighborhood a few blocks from the Milford Mill Metro stop.

"I've lived here 20 years, and it is not a high-crime area," said Roland Wilson, who lives about two blocks from where Mr. Holmes was shot.
