Police said last night they charged a 15-year-old South Baltimore youth as an adult with first-degree murder in the shooting death Thursday of a 14-year-old girl.

The boy, who also faces handgun charges, was being held at the Baltimore City Detention Center, police said.

Police said that about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Atyia Talbott of the 1000 block of Shellbanks Road in Cherry Hill was in an apartment in the 1100 block of Cherry Hill Road where several teen-agers had gathered. One of the youths was playing with a handgun that he allegedly pointed at the victim, police said.

The weapon fired, and a bullet struck the girl in the head near her right eye, killing her almost instantly, police said. Police said the suspect fled but turned himself in later Thursday night. The weapon has not been recovered.
