Loyola falls, 88-78, despite Reese's 34

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- Stuart Downing scored 20 of his 28 points in the first half as host Siena (17-4, 7-2) defeated Loyola (11-9, 4-6), 88-78, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game last night.

Loyola's Michael Reese tied a career high with 34 points as the Greyhounds lost their second straight game in the conference. The Greyhounds held a 32-27 lead after B. J. Pendleton hit the second of two free throws with 7:19 left in the first half.

Then Siena went on a 24-0 run to take a 51-32 lead with 16 seconds to play in the half.

The Greyhounds played catch-up most of the second half as they cut the lead to two at 69-67 on Reese's dunk at the 6:20 mark. But Siena went on a 13-5 run to push the lead back to nine on Doremus Bennerman's two free throws with 1:40 to play.

Bennerman, the MAAC leading scorer, scored 21 points and had six assists for the Saints. Tracy Bergan added 13 points and a game-high tenassists for Loyola. Pendleton added 11 points and 11 rebounds.
