It's a day on which Howard County, Baltimore, Annapolis, Westminster, Montgomery County and the Renaissance AllSports Athletic Club share equal billing.

The 1994 Maryland-District of Columbia Road Runners Club of America 10-Mile Team Challenge will be held on Feb. 27 at 8 a.m. at Howard Community College.

Team awards will be given in men's, women's and overall divisions. To qualify for the overall championship, a club must have 12 male and three female finishers, all of whom must be RRCA members. A club may compete in only the men's or women's division, but it would not be eligible for the overall trophy.

"Last year, we got snowed out," co-race director Rich Fox said Sunday. "It'll be a cup that has been in the closet for two years. Baltimore and certainly the other teams are looking for a real race on a day when everyone can have a shot at it.

"Two years ago, we [Howard County Striders] won the team championship, but it was somewhat dubious because there was some glitch in the tabulation."

That was because the host Striders were tabulating by computer and manually, and the totals did not agree.

Said the Striders' Rick Hatfield: "That was the first year we were using Runscore softwear. The manual results at first indicated another club winning, but the computer results revealed that the Striders had actually won the race by a few points. It caused a little inside ribbing in the club and with the BRRC."

That should help to fuel this year's competition.

Entry fee is $5 for RRCA members. For information, call your area RRCA club or Fox at (410) 461-1406.
