Ethan sits on the county advisory board of Students Helping Other People (SHOP), an organization that holds rallies against teens using drugs and alcohol.

He's also served as treasurer and president of the group at his school and has been involved with Prom Promise and the Maryland Youth Wellness Conference.He has presented testimony before the Governor's Commission on Drug and Alcohol.

Ethan, a senior, is vice president of the Student Government Association and co-captain of the school Math Team.

He's a member of the "It's Academic" team and helps as a lighting technician for school plays and other events.He works with the Peer Mediation team as well as PLOOM (Peer Leaders of Oakland Mills), a school leadership organization.

He holds a 4.0 grade point average and is a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist and a Maryland Distinguished Scholar. He's a National Honor Society member.

Ethan has participated for three years at Johns Hopkins' Center for Talented Youth program in computer science, chemistry and genetics. Last summer, he was part of the Brandeis Summer Odyssey.

Outside of school, he's a Life Scout in the Boy Scouts and works with the state's attorney's office, the state health department and the Oakland Mills Village Board.

Plans: Ethan wants to study genetics or physics in college.

His comments: Through his work with SHOP, "I've really learned how to be a good leader," he says.

"You can really have a lot of fun without using alcohol or other drugs."
