Man charged in theft of ambulance at hospital

February 04, 1994

A 45-year-old Baltimore County man was charged yesterday with stealing an ambulance at Howard County General Hospital.

Joseph F. Curran Jr. was being held on $5,000 bond at the Howard County Detention Center last night. Mr. Curran was charged with theft, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and driving while intoxicated, said Sgt. Steve Keller, police spokesman.

Sergeant Keller said police arrested Mr. Curran Wednesday, but held him at a lock-up in police headquarters in Ellicott City until formally charging him yesterday.

About 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, a private ambulance was taken from the front of the hospital when the driver went inside and left the keys in the ignition, police said.

Sergeant Keller said the suspect drove the ambulance to Baltimore County, parked it on Southwestern Boulevard and walked a block to his home in the first block of Colony Hill Court, where Baltimore County police found him.
