RRCA heats up local competition

The competition has picked up the pace -- and a few area running clubs.

Although the Road Runners Club of America conducts its Women's Distance Festival Grand Prix every summer, there has been little competition between clubs in Maryland.

The Howard County Striders and Montgomery County Road Runners Club do have their 7-Mile Challenge, and every February, the Maryland-District of Columbia Road Runners Clubs square off in their Club Challenge 10-miler.

But the inaugural Maryland RRCA Championship Series -- nine races over six distances at nine locations -- should fuel such rivalries.

"It's sort of a trial thing," says series commissioner Evan Thomas, also the Maryland State RRCA representative and an active Annapolis Striders member. "If it goes, we may add some races and who knows?"

Distances range from 5 kilometers (Bel Air Town Run and Frederick's Fourth) to the Metric Marathon (26.2K). Locations will take runners from Greenbelt to Bel Air, from the Inner Harbor to Cumberland.

"Basically, we gave each club in the state the chance to host one of the races," says Thomas, 52. "Most of the clubs that have a big race going decided to give it a try. I think it's going to help the smaller races a lot. Maybe we'll get some people traveling around."

Eligibility is limited to runners in Maryland RRCA clubs. For individuals, runners must finish five of the nine races to be a series qualifier. For teams, each club must finish a minimum of five runners at distances of less than 25K and three at distances of 25K and greater.

"Some clubs have been talking about it for a while and it's been done in other locations," says Thomas, whose personal record ++ 3-hour, 27-minute finish in last year's B&A Trail Marathon qualified him for the Boston Marathon. "Phil Quinn of the Montgomery County Road Runners Club has done a similar series in New England and he's lending his expertise to our efforts."
