A 24-year-old Taneytown man died after his 1991 Chevrolet Geo Storm was struck head-on by another car at 12:01 a.m. yesterday on Route 23 in northern Harford County, state police said.

Martin Francis Goldsmith was heading north near Houcks Road west of Madonna when a southbound Dodge Shadow driven by Brian Paul Koutz, 21, of Monkton crossed the center line and slammed into the Geo, forcing it into an electric pole, investigators said.

Mr. Goldsmith was partially thrown from the Geo, which flipped over and landed on him, officers said. He was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he died at 2:45 a.m.

Mr. Koutz and a passenger in his car, Meredith Eve Brown, 19, of Baldwin also were taken to Shock Trauma, where they were in serious but stable condition yesterday evening, according to a spokesman.

A second passenger in Mr. Koutz's car, Jonathan Irwin, of Sparks, was not hurt, police said.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
