Ben Wyskida

School: Howard High School

Hometown: Columbia

Age: 16

In just two years on the staff, Ben Wyskida has risen from a staff reporter to editor of his school newspaper, Lion's Tale. He also is vice president of junior class government and belongs to the National Honor Society.

Ben is active with the school's tech crew, which is in charge of providing lighting and sound for various programs and school activities. He belongs to the French Club.

Last year, he was a finalist for the Hugh O'Brien Leadership Award.

Outside of school, Ben volunteers for FISH, an organization that serves as a referral service for people who need food and emergency shelter. He works for the Laurel-based organization three times a month, helping people get in contact with government agencies and community groups that may help them.

Plans: Ben looks to a career in either journalism or politics.

His comments: "A lot of the equipment and things in the school system are outdated. The school system needs to update the technology we have. They're doing that at the new schools. I think it's important that every school in the county should be treated equally."
