Welch scores 24, lifts W. Md.

GETTYSBURG, PA. — Rolando Welch scored 24 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead host Western Maryland over Catholic University, 80-67, in a nonconference game yesterday.

Welch, a senior forward, made 10 of 15 shots from the field and added five assists and three blocked shots.

Junior forward Andy Dziengeleski added 20 for Western Maryland (7-10), including back-to-back baskets after Catholic (4-12) had pulled to within 64-60 with four minutes left.

Gettysburg 79, J. Hopkins 70

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- Steve Gordon and John Griffin each scored 17 as Gettysburg (9-8, 3-4) defeated Johns Hopkins (14-4, 5-2) in a Centennial Conference game.

The Bullets shot 56 percent from the field, making 29 of 52 shots.

Johns Hopkins, which trailed 40-39 at halftime, made 35 percent of its field goals in the second half. Senior center Lou Sabad led the Blue Jays with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Goucher 87, Marymount 57


ARLINGTON, Va. -- Freshman center Predrag Durkovic scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds to lead visiting Goucher past Marymount in a Capital Athletic Conference game.

Salisbury 88, Frostburg 80


FROSTBURG -- Dameon Ross scored 21 points to lead Salisbury State past Frostburg State.

Salisbury State (7-10) trailed 46-44 at halftime but took the lead for good 58-55 at the 13:53 mark of the second half on a basket by Casey Musick.

Frostburg State (10-5) kept close, trailing 80-78 with 2:47 left, but Salisbury used an 8-2 scoring run to seal the win.

Kyle Jefferson added 19 points for Salisbury.

D8 Frostburg was led by Tim Nightengale with 14 points.
