The Harford Gymnastic Training Center's girls Optional team was busy last week. The girls competed in two invitational meets in five days.

First up was the Maryland Classic in Gaithersburg that included teams from eight states. Next for the traveling gymnasts was the Sunshine Cup in Nassau, Bahamas, that featured more than 500 gymnasts from throughout the United States.

In the Bahamas, the Level 8 girls competed. The level had no age-group division and included 82 gymnasts from 20 teams vying for individual medals.

Harford gymnasts, which included Theresa Dziwulski, Kelly rTC Storck, Laura Neumann and Sherri Doyle won seven awards in the Level 8 competition and captured the third-place team trophy with a score of 102.425.

Doyle won gold on uneven bars with a 9.1 routine. She finished 10th on vault (8.60) and was fourth in the all-around (34.50).

Dziwulski took fourth place on vault (8.725) and eighth on beam (8.45). Neumann won the bronze medal on beam (8.60) and finished ninth on bars (8.75).

For the Level 9 competition, which included 29 teams and 124 gymnasts, Harford Gymnastics scored 101.975 to finish in ninth place in the team competition.

Harford's team consisted of Kelly McCreary, Mandy Robinson, Angela Simmons and Tracy Wolf. Gymnasts Kristen Grimmel and Mandy Naworol competed in the All-Star Division.

Robinson took fifth place for her bar routine (8.80). Wolf scored Harford's top score -- a 9.10 on floor exercise -- but finished out of the top 10 against tough competition.

At the Maryland Classic meet in Gaithersburg, Harford's Level 8 team earned bronze with a score of 104.10. Level 8 competitors included Dziwulski, Doyle, Neumann, Storck, Lindsay Robbins, Cassie Demastus, Courtney Ness and Erica Wilmoth.

Individual event medalists in the Senior Division included: Dziwulski third on vault (8.75); Doyle fifth on vault (8.70), fourth on beam (8.70) and seventh on floor (8.85). Storck finished fourth beam (8.70). In the all-around competition, Doyle placed sixth with a 34.50.

In the Junior Division, the individual event medalists included: Neuman, second on vault (8.65); Robbins, third on vault (8.60); and Wilmoth, sixth on vault (8.45). Neuman tied for the silver medal in the Junior all-around with a 34.50.

In Level 9 action, the team of McCreary, Wolf, Simmons and Robinson scored 102.35 at the Maryland Classic for fifth place.

In the Senior age group, McCreary finished second on beam (9.175) and tied for seventh on floor (8.65). Junior event awards were won by Simmons who was fifth on vault (8.85) and second on beam (9.0), and Robinson who was fifth on bars (8.65).

Level 10 gymnast Mandy Naworol posted a 9.10 on balance beam to finish fourth in the preliminaries.

Members of the girls Aberdeen Churchville Parks & Recreation Level 5 team recently played host to a Sectional competition for qualification to the Maryland State Meet through the United States Gymnastics Federation.

The meet, at the new facility in Churchville, produced a dozen qualifiers, each of whom scored above 30.00 in all-around competition. They are: Rachel Baitch, Candice Buckley, Betsy Dart, Angela Ferg, Jessica Johann, Angel Manzari, Kristin McCallum, Lisa Mirabile, Rachel Pedri, Jennifer Profinski, Amy Tabor and Kate Talanehzar.

Each competitor's results are from scores based on performances on vault, bars, balance beam and floor exercise.


At the recent Aberdeen Wrestling Invitational, several Harford County teams matched up with visiting out-of-county teams at Aberdeen High School.

Although Dundalk came away with first place in the team standings, Aberdeen finished third, behind the Attackers of Millersville. Middle River and Crofton rounded out the top five.

The top four individual finishers received trophies at the meet, and several Harford County grapplers were winners.

In the 165-pound Junior Division, Matthew Kunkel of Aberdeen placed first.

Other county champions include Greg Spurgeon of Fallston (Midget, unlimited), Allen Durham of Aberdeen (Junior, 103), Jim Genna (Pee Wee, 90) and S. Ader of North Harford (Pee Wee, 100).

Members of Fallston's wrestling squad earning trophies included third-place finishers Drew White (Pee Wee, 60), Kirk Haslbeck (Pee Wee, 80), Caleb Church (Midget, 122), Dave Sabatino (Midget, unlimited), and fourth-place finishers Mike Rainey (Clinic, 45), Mike McCarty (Junior, 95) and Alan Petrelli (Midget, 110).
