Boston Red Sox -- Agreed to terms with P Jose Melendez on a one-year contract.

California Angels -- Agreed to terms with P Shawn Hillegas on a minor-league contract. Signed P Bill Sampen to a minor-league contract and invited him to camp as a nonroster player.

Detroit Tigers -- Agreed to terms with C Chad Kreuter on a one-year contract. Named Jeff Scott director of scouting.

Florida Marlins -- Announced the resignation of John Panagakis, director of team travel, effective March 15. Named Bill Beck director of team travel.

Kansas City Royals -- Agreed to terms with OF Dave Henderson on a one-year contract.

Los Angeles Dodgers -- Agreed to terms with P Kevin Gross and P Ramon Martinez on a one-year contract.

Montreal Expos -- Agreed to terms with P Chris Nabholz (Towson State), P Joey Eischen, IF Shane Andrews and IF Chris Martin on one-year contracts.

New York Yankees -- Agreed to terms with P Bob Ojeda on a minor-league contract and invited him to camp as a nonroster player.

San Diego Padres -- Agreed to terms with former Orioles 2B Harold Reynolds on a minor-league contract and invited him to camp as a nonroster player.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Agreed to terms with P Juan Guzman on a two-year contract.

CBA -- Approved the sale of the general partnership share of the Grand Rapids Hoops from TJR Sports Management to Gus Macker Enterprises.

College

Indiana State -- Announced the resignation of offensive coordinator Dan Ritter.

Nebraska Wesleyan -- Named Steve Stanard football coach.

New Haven -- Named Tony Sparano football coach.

Football

NFL -- Named Bob McElwee referee for the Super Bowl. The rest the crew will be Art Demmas (umpire), Sid Semon (head linesman), Tom Barnes (line judge), Al Jury (back judge), Nate Jones (side judge) and Don Orr (field judge).

Pro Bowl -- AFC added Los Angeles Raiders G Max Montoya to the roster, replacing Houston Oilers G Mike Munchak (knee). NFC added Minnesota Vikings WR Cris Carter and Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre, replacing Packers WR Sterling Sharpe (toe) and Dallas Cowboys QB Troy Aikman (concussion).

Green Bay Packers -- Named Harry Sydney assistant coach.

San Diego Chargers -- Promoted former Maryland assistant Ralph Friedgen to offensive coordinator. Named Dwain Painter and Dennis Murphy to coaching staff.

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim -- Signed junior free-agent LW Mike Maneluk to a multiyear contract and announced he will join the team for the 1994-95 season.

L Buffalo Sabres -- Optioned RW Scott Thomas to AHL Rochester.

Dallas Stars -- Assigned D Tommy Sjodin to IHL Kalamazoo.

Hartford Whalers -- Recalled C Todd Harkins from AHL Springfield. Reassigned F Igor Chibirev to Springfield.

Ottawa Senators -- Assigned LW Jarmo Kekalainen to AHL Prince Edward Island.

Quebec Nordiques -- Announced that D Garth Butcher had renegotiated his contract and was to join the club last night.

Toronto Maple Leafs -- Recalled C Yanic Perreault from AHL St. John's.

IHL -- Awarded an expansion franchise to Chicago for the 1994-95 season.

England national team -- Named Terry Venables coach.
