Backup junior forward Kevin Bellinger scored a career-high 26 points as UMBC defeated North Carolina-Asheville, 78-68, at UMBC Fieldhouse last night.

The 6-foot-7 Brooklyn native, who sat out the Retrievers' last game for a violation of team rules, hit 12 of 18 from the field.

"I let the team down on the road trip and I wanted to make it up by stepping up my game," Bellinger said.

The Bulldogs (2-13, 0-7 Big South), who lost their 25th in a row on the road, led by as many as nine in the first half.

But Bellinger scored all 10 of his first-half points in the final 10:16 to shave the UNC-Asheville lead to 35-31 at halftime. After Josh Kohn opened the second half with a three-pointer, UMBC (4-11, 3-4) went on a 11-0 run to take the lead for good.
