Fairfield romps past Loyola, 85-67

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Freshman forward Shannon Bowman scored 14 points to pace Fairfield (6-10, 2-3) to an 85-67 victory over Loyola (9-6, 3-3) in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game last night.

Bowman scored 11 in the first half, as Fairfield took a 42-30 halftime lead. Loyola drew within nine on B. J. Pendleton's layup, making the score 42-33 with 17:47 left.

But after Fairfield's Peter Guarasci hit the second of two free throws,giving Fairfield a 43-33 with 16:06 left, the Greyhounds didn't get within single digits again. Fairfield held its largest lead at 26 points on two separate occasions late in the second half.

Pendleton led Loyola with 16 points. Darius Johnson added 14 and Michael Reese 10.

Joining Bowman in double figures for the Stags was Greg Francis 13 points, Meishay Gattis with 12 and Craig Martin with 10.

Loyola, concluding a four-game MAAC trip with a 2-2 mark, plays

William and Mary at 1 p.m. Sunday.
