Atlanta Braves -- Agreed to terms on a one-year contract with OF Ron Gant.

Orioles -- Signed P Ben McDonald to a one-year contract.

Boston Red Sox -- Named Dan Duquette VP and GM.

California Angels -- Signed P Shawn Hillegas to a minor-league contract. Announced that Mike Hartley will pitch in the Japanese Pacific League in a settlement reached with Seattle Mariners. Hartley, a free agent, had signed with the Angels and was sold to Chiba Lotte. Confusion arose when Hartley was placed on Double-A Midland's roster and was claimed by the Mariners.

Cincinnati Reds -- Signed IF Bret Boone, P Steve Foster, P Jerry Spradlin, P Kevin Jarvis and P Jeff Pierce to one-year contracts. Named Dan Siegel trainer of rookie-level Princeton.

Colorado Rockies -- Signed C Joe Girardi to a three-year contract. Signed P Scott Frederickson to a one-year contract. Invited P Bryan Rekar to spring training as a nonroster player.

Kansas City Royals -- Signed 1B/DH Steve Balboni to a minor-league contract and invited him to spring training. Invited 2B Michael Tucker to spring training. Agreed to terms with IF David Howard on a one-year contract and avoided salary arbitration. Agreed to terms with C Lance Jennings, 1B Joe Vitiello and SS Shane Halter on contracts.

Minnesota Twins -- Agreed to terms with OF/1B Gene Larkin on a one-year contract and invited him and C Damian Miller to training camp as nonroster players.

Montreal Expos -- Announced resignation of GM Dan Duquette. Named Kevin Malone director of player personnel.

New York Yankees -- Agreed to terms with P Jim Abbott, P Mariano Rivera, IF Russ Davis, IF Andy Fox, OF Jay Leach and OF Jason Robertson on one-year contracts.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Agreed to terms with C Glenn Sutko on a one-year contract.

Seattle Mariners -- Announced that Ken Griffey Sr. has resigned as hitting coach but will stay with the organization as a minor-league hitting and outfield instructor. Invited P Travis Buckley, P Tim Davis, P Derek Lowe, P Tony Phillips, P Mac Suzuki, P Ron Villone, C Chris Widger, IF Tommy Hinzo, IF Luis Sojo, IF Dale Sveum and OF Keith Mitchell to spring training as nonroster players.

Dallas Mavericks -- Placed C Sean Rooks on the injury list.

Washington Bullets -- Signed G Gerald Paddio to a 10-day contract.

NCAA -- Restored the eligibility of Wake Forest freshman F Ricardo Peral.

Los Angeles Raiders -- DE Howie Long announced his retirement.

I= New York Jets -- Named Ray Sherman offensive coordinator.

Dallas Freeze (CHL) -- Signed G Erin Whitten, the first woman to participate in a CHL game, to a one-year, nonguaranteed contract.
