Rekindled Fuel Fund Classic to feature five top matchups

The Fuel Fund Classic will go on.

It took some schedule juggling on the part of the event's planning committee and the 10 schools involved, but all five games -- postponed earlier this month because of inclement weather -- will be played Wednesday, Feb. 16 at the Baltimore Arena.

"I'm so excited I could burst at this point," said Ellen Lockard, executive director of the Fuel Fund of Central Maryland and a member of the planning committee. "The coaches and the schools have been wonderful in working with us in fitting this into their schedules. We had to adjust some times and things, but basically it's going to happen.

"It's been a monumental undertaking coordinating all 10 teams and finding a date the arena had available, but the schedules are all in sync and the show will go on."

The mixer, which consists of three boys and two girls games, will feature a meeting between Dunbar's second-ranked boys team and No. 4 Woodlawn (12-0) at 8 p.m. The other boys matchups include No. 5 Lake Clifton and No. 9 Broadneck at 5 p.m. and Edgewood vs. Hammond at 3:30.

Four of the area's top seven girls teams will be playing, including a showdown for the area's top ranking between No. 1 Western and No. 2 Hammond at 6:30 p.m. Fourth-ranked St. Mary's and No. 7 Mount Hebron will meet in the opening game at 2 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Fuel Fund of Central Maryland, which helps needy area families pay fuel costs. Joni Scholwin, chairperson of the planning committee, said she was "ecstatic" to learn that all five games would be played.

"We thought we might be able to get three games in, but we managed to keep all five games, which is great," said Scholwin. "We had to fiddle with the schedules, but we didn't want to leave anyone out and we haven't and we're thrilled. Hopefully, people will come out and support it because with the way the weather has been, more people than ever will need help paying their fuel bills."

Tickets are $6 in advance and $10 at the door. Tickets are available at participating schools, the Baltimore Arena and TicketMaster locations.
