Maryland women rally, fall to N.C. State, 57-56

BUIES CREEK, N.C. — RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina State held off a late surge and a last-second shot to beat Maryland, 57-56, in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Reynolds Coliseum yesterday.

Quicha Floyd scored the Wolfpack's final basket with 3:11 remaining, giving N.C. State a 57-50 lead. The Terps went on a 6-0 run to pull with one, but Bonnie Rimkus' final shot was deflected.

Maryland (8-7, 3-3) never trailed in the first half, but allowed a nine-point lead to shrink to one (26-25) by the intermission.

The Wolfpack took the lead on the opening possession of the second half and led by as many as seven. The Terrapins, who shot 59.1 percent in the first half, shot only 31.3in the second.

"Defensively, the team did a good job of carrying out our game plan of keeping the ball out of the paint and not allowing Rimkus to shoot the three," said Wolfpack coach Kay Yow.

N.C. State (9-6, 3-4) was led by Jennifer Howard (19 points) and Kolleen Kreul (14 points, seven rebounds). Rimkus, the ACC's second-leading scorer, led Maryland with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
