Murphy is elected president of USGA

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Reg Murphy, former president and publisher of The Baltimore Sun, yesterday was elected to a one-year term as president of the United States Golf Association. He joined the Executive Committee of the USGA in 1988 and served as vice president the last three years.

Murphy, 59, succeeds Stuart F. Bloch, who served as president for the past two years.

Murphy is a member of Caves Valley Golf Club, in Owings Mills, where he holds an 11 handicap. He has played golf with George Bush and Arnold Palmer.
