UMBC's rally falls short against UNC-Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- UNC-Greensboro held off a frantic effort by UMBC in the closing minutes for a 69-68 victory in a Big South Conference game yesterday.

UMBC closed to within 64-62 on a basket by Spencer Ferguson with 23 seconds remaining. The Spartans (9-5, 5-1) pushed the ** lead to 67-62 on a pair of free throws by Scott Hartzell and one by Chuck Fortney.

With five seconds left, Eric Wyatt pulled the Retrievers to 67-65 on a three-pointer, but Greg Williams hit two free throws with three seconds left.

Eric Cuthrell led the Spartans with 18 points. Fortney added 17. Ferguson and Marc Lay led UMBC with 11 points each.
