Work release opposed for some prisoners

January 20, 1994

ANNAPOLIS -- Prisoners serving life sentences in Maryland should not be allowed to participate in work-release programs, says Del. Donald B. Elliott, R-Carroll, Howard.

Mr. Elliott is co-sponsoring a bill on the issue with Del. Ethel A. Murray, D-Cecil, Harford.

He did not attend a hearing on the bill before the House Judiciary Committee Tuesday but said he was told that a few opponents testified.

Ms. Murray drafted the bill and Mr. Elliott said he signed on as a co-sponsor because he agreed with its intent.

"When you've got life, you've done a pretty horrible crime," he said. "We should keep these people off the street."
