Apple loses executive to Motorola

Apple Computer Inc. is losing the executive in charge of its new line of computers, whose success is crucial to the company's future.

Randall Battat, 34, is leaving to join Motorola Inc., both companies announced yesterday.

Mr. Battat had headed an Apple unit that will produce personal computers based on the Power PC chip, jointly designed by Apple, IBM and Motorola.
