25 Years Ago (Week of Jan. 5-11, 1969):

* In the same weekend, two flags were stolen from the Howard County Courthouse. A Maryland flag was taken from the county commissioners' hearing room, and the American flag, which was flown from the flagpole outside the courthouse, was also taken.

50 Years Ago (week of Jan. 9-15, 1944):

* Two Howard County brothers serving in the Army met in Australia for the first time in more than three years. The two brothers, Pvt. Edward Affeldt and Sgt. John Affeldt, hailed from the Pine Orchard area. A third brother, Pvt. Robert Affeldt, was stationed in the South Pacific.

* Elmer C. Cavey of Ellicott City headed up the fourth War Loan Drive for the county. Howard County's quota for the drive was set at $200,000 in war bonds.
