CBS plans prime-time Kerrigan show

LOS ANGELES -- Nancy Kerrigan will be featured in a prime-time special called "Nancy and Her Friends," which will air the week of Feb. 6, CBS announced yesterday.

"I guess it's her coming out party. She is desirous of skating before an audience before she goes over [for the Olympics]," said Rick Gentile, senior vice president of CBS Sports.

"She did not have the opportunity to skate competitively in the nationals, and she really wants to get that one performance under her belt."

But it will not involve competitive skating. The entertainment special, which should attract top dollar advertising rates for CBS, will feature an exhibition by Kerrigan and other Olympic figure skaters on the eve of the Olympics.

Gentile said the date for the telecast has not been set, because it's dependent on Kerrigan first skating for a panel of Olympic Committee officials that week to determine if she is fit to compete in the Olympics. The CBS telecast, which will be taped at Boston College, will air one or two days after that performance.

"We just finalized the deal today," Gentile said. He declined to say how much CBS paid Kerrigan. ProServe, which manages Kerrigan, will produce the special for CBS.

If the Olympic panel decides she is not fit, Gentile said the special will likely be scrapped. Gentile said CBS is also discussing other specials with Kerrigan to air after the Olympics, including Sunday afternoons next fall. "You might have heard we have somewhat of a void there," he said referring to CBS #F recently losing rights to the NFL to Fox for next fall.
