Afc Wild-card Game: Broncos At Raiders

January 09, 1994|By Vito Stellino

Time: 4 p.m. today

Site: Los Angeles Coliseum

TV: Channels 2, 4

Radio: WBAL (1090 AM)

Line: Raiders by 1 1/2

Records: Broncos 9-7; Raiders 10-6

Last week: The Raiders beat the Broncos, 33-30, in overtime on Jeff Jaeger's 47-yard field goal. The Raiders rallied from a 30-13 deficit in the third quarter.

Last meeting: Last week.

The series: The Raiders have a 46-19-2 edge in the series that dates back to 1960 when they were both charter members of the AFL. The Raiders won both regular-season games this year by three points.

On the sidelines: Wade Phillips, in his first season as the Denver coach, is 9-7. Art Shell, in his fifth season as Raiders coach, is 46-33.

What the Raiders have to do to win: They need a running game to complement Jeff Hostetler's arm. Tyrone Montgomery led the Raiders on the ground with only 44 yards in the win against the Broncos last week. Hostetler saved the Raiders with a 310-yard, three-touchdown performance, but the Raiders can't always count on Hostetler for that kind of a game.

What the Broncos have to do to win: Play well for four quarters. Last week, the Broncos scored the first six times they had the ball, built up a 30-13 lead and then were blanked in the last quarter and in overtime. The Broncos, who miss injured Rod Bernstein, also need some running from Robert Delpino so John Elway doesn't have to carry the Broncos with his right arm.

Injury report: Broncos: DE Dan Williams (knee) is out. CB Charles Dimry (hip), RB Robert Delpino (toe) are questionable. QB John Elway (flu), T Brian Habib (calf), TE Reggie Johnson (hamstring), WR Tony Kimbrough (shoulder), LB Jeff Mills (flu), TE Derek Russell (ankle), T Kirk Scrafford (neck), TE Shannon Sharpe (ankle), S Dennis Smith (shoulder), T Dave Widell (ankle), LB Dave Wyman (thumb-toe) are probable. Raiders: RB Greg Robinson (knee) is doubtful. S Patrick Bates (quadricep), DT Nolan Harrison (ankle), WR Raghib Ismail (neck), CB James Trapp (abdomen) are questionable. RB Randy Jordan (concussion), RB Steve Smith (ankle), T Greg Skrepenak (foot) are probable.

Outlook: This game figures to be close. If you throw out the Raiders' 24-0 victory in the second game last year when Elway was injured, the past eight games between the clubs have been decided by five points or less. The Raiders have the edge at the Coliseum where the Broncos haven't won since 1987 so maybe they're finally due to beat the Raiders.
