HOLLYWOOD — Barricade standoff ends in woman's death

HOLLYWOOD -- An eight-hour barricade situation ended early yesterday with the shooting death of a 26-year-old Hollywood woman in her house and the superficial wounding of a Maryland state trooper.

State police said they were called to the home of Fawnda Roxanne Woodward about 8 p.m. Friday.

Neighbors reported hearing shots being fired inside the house. When troopers arrived, Ms. Woodward opened fire on them, police said, hitting several patrol cars, other vehicles and neighboring homes.

About 4:15 a.m., after repeated telephone contacts with Ms. Woodward, troopers from the assault team entered the house. They confronted Ms. Woodward in her bedroom, where, police said, she opened fire on two troopers. They returned fire, hitting her several times. She died later at St. Mary's County Hospital.

Tfc. Mark Karwacki was treated and released from St. Mary's County Hospital for shotgun pellet wounds in the arms.
