Traded SS Freddie Benavides to the Montreal Expos for P Ivan Arteaga and P Rodney Pedraza. Assigned Pedraza to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Named Stan Kyles pitching coach at Single-A Bend and Bill Champion pitching coach at Double-A New Haven.

Houston Astros -- Named Tim Purpura assistant director of minor league operations.

Kansas City Royals -- Agreed to terms with OF Hubie Brooks on a minor-league contract.

Los Angeles Dodgers -- Agreed to terms with P Gary Wayne on a minor-league contract.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Agreed to terms with P Randy Tomlin on a one-year contract.

Texas Rangers -- Agreed to terms with P Jack Armstrong on a one-year contract. Signed free-agent IF-OF Greg Litton to a minor-league contract with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

D8 Las Vegas Posse (CFL) -- Named Ron Meyer head coach.

NHL -- Suspended New York Islanders RW Mick Vukota 10 games without pay and fined him $10,000 and suspended Islanders coach Al Arbour five games and fined him $1,000 because Vukota left the bench to join an altercation on the ice Tuesday. Suspended Montreal Canadiens D J. J. Daigneault three games and fined him $500 for elbowing the Calgary Flames' German Titov on Dec. 31. Suspended Flames LW Gary Roberts, effective immediately and for a period to be determined at the conclusion of an investigation into slashing incidents involving Roberts during a game against the New York Rangers on Jan. 5.

Montreal Canadiens -- Assigned G Les Kuntar, D Christian Proulx and D Lindsay Vallis to AHL Fredericton.

New York Islanders -- Recalled RW Dan Plante and LW Zigmund Palffy from IHL Salt Lake.

Pittsburgh Penguins -- Recalled LW Markus Naslund, RW Justin Duberman and RW Ed Patterson from IHL Cleveland.

Winnipeg Jets -- Recalled RW Yan Kaminsky from AHL Moncton. Assigned C Rob Murray to Moncton.
