CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA — CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- In-flight movies usually are pretty forgettable. But Claire Salter will never forget what she saw on the screen during a London-to-Charlotte flight on USAir.

An hour or so from Charlotte Wednesday, after the credits for "The Firm" faded, she was astonished to see the image of her boyfriend, J.D. Kyzer, on the screen.

"Will you marry me?" he asked on film.

Ms. Salter's parents in England, whom Ms. Salter had been visiting over an extended Christmas holiday, knew it was coming. So did the flight crew and dozens of USAir employees in Charlotte, to whom Mr. Kyzer has become a romantic hero.

She didn't say anything. She couldn't. She had to write out her answer on a sheet of paper she pinned to the back of her coat.

"YES," it said.
