* Under-10 girls -- The Columbia Terrapins defeated the Howard County Youth Program Cougars, 23-16, on Sunday to win the Arbutus Christmas Tournament championship.

Rashida Walcott scored a game-high seven points to lead Columbia, and Missy Moore added six. Other Terrapins scorers were Sarah Costa (four), Sarah Hobart (three), Tanae Jenifer (two) and Fana Walcott (one).

The Cougars -- who had defeated the Terps, 15-13, to advance to the title game in the double-elimination tournament -- were paced by Jamie Hilliard, Ashley Evans, Kate Nelson and Kaitlin Joyce. Seven Cougars scored, but none had more than four points.

Swimming

The Howard County-dominated Retriever Aquatic Club put up bignumbers at the recent Swimming Invitational at SUNY-Buffalo.

Seven swimmers qualified for Junior Nationals with 16 times below the cut. Club swimmers set eight individual and eight relay meet records.

Twenty-three Retrievers placed among the top three in their events.

Local swimmers who qualified for Junior Nationals were Rachel Handshu, 13, of Columbia; Laurie Felker, 13, of Ellicott City; Marci Malchak, 16, of Columbia; and Elysia Moreland, 17, of Columbia.

Others to qualify were Lisa Webb of Catonsville, Pat McGonigal of Jessup and Sherwin Sapasap of Abingdon.
