Zoning board again postpones retreat hearing

January 06, 1994

The Carroll Board of Zoning Appeals has agreed to postpone a hearing on a proposed retreat and conference center on West Falls Road in Mount Airy for a second time.

About 30 neighbors who oppose the center hired Westminster attorney Brian M. Bowersox to represent them at the hearing, and they need time to prepare a case, Mr. Bowersox said yesterday.

The hearing is scheduled for late February.

It originally was set for December. Neighbors asked then that it be postponed until January.

James J. Sweet wants to open a center for corporate, religious and educational gatherings on 22 acres he owns in the 5600 block of West Falls Road.

He invited neighbors to his home Tuesday night to discuss his plan, but Mr. Bowersox said he advised neighbors not to attend.

Mr. Sweet said yesterday that only one neighbor -- a friend of his who supports the plan -- attended.
