Center to open downtown for blood donors

In hopes of drawing blood donors from the downtown area, a Red Cross donor center will open at 2 p.m. today in the Maryland National Bank building at 10 Light St., according to Linda Klein, a spokeswoman for the American Red Cross Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Blood Services.

The donor center, with its entrance on Redwood Street, will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"Donors expressed convenience as a big factor in giving blood, so we're trying to make it convenient as possible for people with this downtown location," Ms. Klein said. "We still send the bloodmobile around and hold blood drives at companies. . . ."

NationsBank, Maryland National's parent company, has donated 3,000 square feet of space for the center and $15,000 for the first year's expenses, Ms. Klein said.

The other donor center in the city is at 4700 Mount Hope Drive in Northwest Baltimore.
