Brothers plead guilty to brawl during party

January 05, 1994

Two brothers from Glen Burnie pleaded guilty in Anne Arundel Circuit Court yesterday for beating up two men in a fight during a party last summer.

Michael Joseph Utz, 19, and Kurt Russell Utz, 21, both of the 100 block of Highland Road pleaded guilty to battery in connection with an Aug. 7 brawl that left one victim with serious head injuries and another with a badly cut leg.

Judge Raymond G. Thieme Jr. set sentencing for Feb. 25.

Assistant State's Attorney Fred Paone said Tina Broadwater, the former girlfriend of Kurt Utz, was at a party in the 100 block of Highland Drive about 1 a.m.

Kurt Utz approached her and said she shouldn't be there.

Joshua Thorn, 22, of Glen Burnie, who was at the party, confronted Kurt Utz.

After a brief shoving match, Kurt Utz hit Mr. Thorn in the back of the head with a tire iron, Mr. Paone said.

During the ensuing brawl, Michael Utz grabbed a machete and cut Richard Listmann, 26, of Glen Burnie, on the thigh.

Mr. Thorn was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was treated for several days before he was released, Mr. Paone said.

Mr. Listmann was treated at North Arundel Hospital for a thigh wound.
