Driver hospitalized after hitting pole

A Westminster woman was in serious but stable condition after falling asleep at the wheel of her car and hitting a utility pole, a Maryland Shock Trauma Center spokesman said yesterday afternoon.

Brenda Sue Smith, 33, was flown to the center in Baltimore on Friday to be treated for facial injuries.

Ms. Smith was traveling east on Old Gamber Road near Gamber Road at 2:18 p.m. when she fell asleep at the wheel, crossed the road and struck the pole, state police said.

The driver told police she did not remember the accident.
