Workers find marijuana on 727 jetliner at BWI

January 04, 1994

Workers servicing a 727 jetliner at Baltimore-Washington International Airport yesterday discovered more than 75 pounds of marijuana hidden in the plane's wheel well, state police reported.

The marijuana was found about 4 a.m. in the wheel well of the two-engine jet that seats 180. American Airlines Flight 878 had originated in Cancun, Mexico, and had made stops in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Raleigh, N.C., before landing at BWI, said Mike McKelvin, a state police spokesman.

Police estimated the value of the marijuana at more than $75,000.

"Ground personnel at BWI opened up an access panel in the right wheel well, and that's where they found it," Mr. McKelvin said.

"Our investigation is continuing to see if we can find out who was supposed to be the pickup person," he said.
