NEW YEAR'S EVE

Bid adieu to 1993 at the Baltimore Convention Center, where country, jazz, Motown and rock music will keep revelers dancing from 8:30 p.m. to midnight. A dance club, karaoke singing, strolling magicians and costumed characters -- including Yogi Bear and Scooby Doo -- will add to the merrymaking.

The family-oriented, alcohol-free event also features comedian Bob Somerby, children's entertainer John "Kinderman" Taylor and disc jockey Dan the Man Gladding. Admission: $7 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.

Or brave the chilly air at the Harborplace Amphitheatre, where dance instructors Jim and Mindy Ratliff will help keep you warm by offering free lessons in the latest country music steps from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Don't forget to synchronize your watches for a spectacular display of sound and color. At 11:45 p.m., you'll want to join the crowd at the Inner Harbor for a fireworks display by Zambelli Internationale. If it rains -- or snows -- the fireworks will be held at 7 p.m. tomorrow.

Information: 837-4636 or 1-800-282-6632.

Show off your skating prowess today at the Inner Harbor Ice Rink at Rash Field. New Year's Eve sessions are noon to 2 p.m., 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Skate late for a spectacular view of the midnight fireworks over the harbor. Admission: $3.75. Skate rental: $1.75. Information: 385-0675.
