A New Year's Gala

December 30, 1993|By Susan Fila Murphy

A line of people in right minds

form outside, waiting to join

friends and co-workers to

celebrate an end, cheer a beginning.

As the annual countdown begins,

corks of champagne await their

performance time, and on the count

of three, bottles are shaken. At the

call of midnight, corks pop with the

filling of glasses, hugs and handshakes,

a few kisses under the mistletoe.

Past resolutions forgotten, new ones

are made, whether they will last or not.

Joy and laughter fill the room; now

you believe that peace on earth is real.
