No. 2 Dunbar races to 87-66 victory in first round of Altoona tournament

No. 2 Dunbar raced to a 19-10 first-quarter lead and went on to build leads of as many as 31 points en route to a 87-66 win over Carlisle (Pa.) in a first-round game of the Altoona Rotary Tournament last night in Altoona, Pa.

Senior center Norman Nolan scored 20 points, Marvis Thornton had 16, Eric McNeal had 13 and Billy Wells had 11. The Poets connected on 38 of 57 field goals. Dunbar gets a bye today and will play again tomorrow against the winner of tonight's Altoona-Archbishop Molloy (N.Y.) contest.

* Cardinal Gibbons 75, Xaverian (N.Y.) 59: Steve Wojciechowski scored 22 points and had seven assists to lead No. 3 Cardinal Gibbons (9-2) past Xaverian (N.Y.).in the first round of the Good Counsel Alumni Holiday Classic in Wheaton.

Ryan Beaumont added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Crusaders, who will play Good Counsel in the semifinals tonight at 8:15 p.m.

Girls basketball

* Arundel Tournament: Senior Beth Lister scored 16 points and had 11 rebounds and three blocks to lead No. 17 Westminster to a 54-49 upset of No. 14 Wilde Lake in the Arundel Holiday Tournament.

The Owls (5-1) meet Arundel in the championship game at 7:30 tonight.

Shannon Noon scored 17 to lead Arundel over Roosevelt, 50-38.

* Poly Tournament: Sophomore forward Kelly Logan had 13 points to lead host Poly (6-2) over Surrattsville, 51-39. Patterson beat Ballou (D.C.), 70-38, as senior forward Maggie Owsianny led all scorers with 23 points. Milford Mill beat Edgewood, 26-21.
