Meeae Chae

School: Mount Hebron High School

Hometown: Ellicott City

Age: 17

Meeae believes her most important work is the kind she does with other students -- the newly arrived Asian immigrants who barely speak English or know the local culture.

As head of the school's Asian Students for Interracial Awareness, she is working to raise the consciousness of peers who may otherwise be less sensitive, while helping the newly arrived students to adjust. Friends describe her as a caring and compassionate person who strives to help the Asian community.

Meeae was inducted this fall into the National Honor Society. She is part of the Students for Environmental Awareness and helps with cleanup and recycling efforts. She also participates in American Field Service and the French Club.

She volunteers as a tutor to Mount Hebron students, as well as to third-graders at St. John's Lane Elementary School. Last year, she was recognized as one of the top 25 percent of students in math throughout the county.

Outside school, she belongs to the St. Bernard Catholic Church youth group. She is planning to participate in the People to People Student Ambassador Program to Russia's Youth Summit Conference of 1994.

Plans: Meeae wants to study bio-psychology in college.

Her comments: "I want to help Asian students fit in. I want to help them to feel comfortable at Mount Hebron. I want to just help people who have problems."
