* The heavy rains of Monday caused high waters at Linwood and Union Bridge, stopping all traffic from the Union Bridge state road to either place from 9 p.m. until about 9 a.m. Tuesday. The Pipe Creek stream was a raging torrent and resembled a river. The stream covered the state road to an impassable state at many places. No delay was made to Western Maryland Railroad trains. The men employed at the Union Bridge car shops, living west of the city, were compelled to leave their cars and walk to the coal tipple and up the track. At Linwood, no one could get to the village from the state road. At the Hibberd property, near New Windsor, the meadows were all under deep water by Pipe Creek overflowing. -- Democratic Advocate, Jan. 7, 1944.
