25 Years Ago (Week of Dec. 15-21, 1968):

* Eroding storm drains at Washington Boulevard and Levering Avenue in Elkridge threatened to collapse the roadway at that intersection, where the drain system passed under Washington Boulevard. 50 Years Ago (Week of Dec. 19-25, 1943):

* Lionel Burgess, principal of Ellicott City Elementary School, announced his resignation after accepting a position with the state Department of Education. He had worked in the Howard County school system since 1927.

* Howard County Courthouse employees were hit hard by influenza and the grippe this week. "Casualties" included the Clerk of the Court, the Register of Wills, the county assessor and the chairman of the Ration Board. All were reported to be in improving condition.
