A Winfield woman has established a fund to benefit the widow and children of Danny Bruce Boone, a part-time bartender who was killed Dec. 11 after a fight erupted during a wedding reception where he was working in Mount Airy.

Dena Hozik, a friend of the Boone family, said she set up the fund so Deborah A. Biegun Boone "can use the money for her family as she sees fit."

"The reason I had this fund set up is because there were so many people wanting to help in some way," Mrs. Hozik said. "Some people thought of food, but food goes in and out, and that's it. Money can be used for many things."

State police said Mr. Boone, 45, of the 2600 block of Walston Road, "was involved in the argument and fight inside the building, and we believe he probably was pursued" as he walked out of the Mount Airy American Legion Hall where the reception was being held.

Mr. Boone's body was found on a nearby road shortly after state police arrived to break up the brawl about 1:15 a.m.

An autopsy showed that Mr. Boone died from a blow to his forehead. State police investigators have questioned reception guests, but have no leads as to the cause of the fight and Mr. Boone's death.

Mrs. Hozik said that because many who attended the wedding were from Montgomery County, the police might find more information if the story of Mr. Boone's death was publicized more widely. Police investigators have gone to Montgomery County to interview some guests.

Mrs. Hozik said she and her husband, Nick, believe the fund raising will help Mrs. Boone, who had been married to Mr. Boone for 23 years and has three children -- Heather Lynne, 19; David Andrew, 14; and Lauren Marie, 10.

But the Hoziks still are concerned about the lack of information about their friend's death.

"All of us are asking, 'Why can't they find out anything?' " Mrs. Hozik said. "Why don't they know what happened?"

Donations may be sent to the Boone Family Fund, Carroll County Bank and Trust, 1001 Twin Arch Road, Mount Airy, MD 21771.
