Boxes of evidence barred from trial of 'Dr. Bob'

December 23, 1993

Anne Arundel County Circuit Court Judge Bruce C. Williams ruled this week that 44 boxes of evidence and a computer seized by state police in their investigation of "Dr. Bob" cannot be used at trial, weakening the prosecution's case against Robert Franklin Miller.

Police say they suspect Mr. Miller, 40, of the 800 block of Dividing Road in Severna Park of conspiring to run a chiropractor certification scam and of breaking into the former Bridgeview restaurant. Mr. Miller is in the county jail awaiting trial next year on charges in both cases.

The judge agreed with Assistant Public Defender Robert Waldman, who represents Mr. Miller, that the affidavit for the warrant was too broad and listed general, unverified suspicions.

"The affidavit, by which police requested the authority to recover the evidence, made no mention of the chiropractic business plan nor of the difficulties with the Bridgeview restaurant," Mr. Waldman said.

General searches are barred by the Bill of Rights.

Police are investigating, but no arrest has been made.

Man grabs purse, escapes in Jeep

An Edgewater woman was slightly injured Tuesday when she struggled with a purse-snatcher outside a toy store on Defense Highway in Annapolis, county police said.

Joan Lauffer, 51, did not require medical attention at a hospital, according to police, who said she scraped her knee when the robber knocked her to the ground.

Police said Ms. Lauffer was walking to a side parking lot at the Toys R Us store, in the first block of Defense Highway, about noon when a man came up from behind, knocked her down and stole her purse.

The woman saw the man get into a white Jeep. No description of the robber was immediately available.
