Anne Arundel County school board member Joseph Foster will serve as liaison between the Board of Education and the County Council this year.

That was just one of the appointments announced last week by school board President Thomas Twombly.

"It is important that, as a lay board, we make our presence felt in the communities we serve," Mr. Twombly said.

"This year, board members will be active participants on a number of school system committees, as well as various Maryland Boards of Education [MABE] committees and various local government committees."

School board member Jo Ann Tollenger, for example, has been named as liaison to the Anne Arundel County Planning Advisory Board -- a key committee whose decisions can affect school system construction plans.

And Maureen Carr-York will work with the Anne Arundel County legislative delegation, as well as serve as an alternate on the Federal Relations Network Committee of MABE.

Dorothy Chaney will serve as the legislative committee chair for MABE this year.

Mr. Twombly has been named to serve on MABE's budget committee.

Within the county school system, student board member Desira St. Pierre will be a member of the Human Relations committee, and Carlesa Finney will serve on the Guidance Advisory Committee.

Mrs. Chaney is slated to serve on the Scholarships for Scholars Committee, and Michael A. Pace will serve on the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts Committee.

"We hope our participation on these committees will benefit the school system, and assist us as we work cooperatively with parents, other educators and community members," Mr. Foster said.
