Woman, 56, grandchild, 3, killed in crash

December 19, 1993|By Staff Report

A 3-year-old girl and her grandmother were killed yesterday when the car they were riding in veered out of control and struck an abandoned tractor-trailer parked on the shoulder of the road in Allegany County.

The driver of the car -- who state police said was the girl's mother and the woman's daughter -- was hospitalized with serious internal injuries.

Police said Ashley Nicole Merrbach and Shirley Elousie Merrbach, 56, both of Grantsville in Garrett County, were dead at the scene.

The accident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. in the eastbound lane of Interstate 68 at George's Creek Road in Allegany County, about three miles from the Garrett County line.

Police said a disabled 18-wheel tractor-trailer that its driver had abandoned was parked on the shoulder. A 1993 Ford Festiva driven by Shirley Rosemarie Merrbach, 25, lost control and crashed into the rear of the trailer.

Then the car careened across the two-lane highway and struck a guard rail. The impact of the crash into the trailer sheared the roof of the car, police said.

The driver, Shirley Rosemarie Merrbach, also of Grantsville, was taken to Cumberland Memorial Hospital where she was listed in critical condition yesterday.

Police said that there was heavy fog in the area at the time of the accident. The tractor-trailer driver was cited for not using a reflective safety triangle. The truck driver was not identified.
