Around the house

* Prevent stains on tablecloths and napkins. Spray linens with fabric protector at least one day before using. Be sure to test for colorfastness in an inconspicuous spot.

* Wrap rubber bands or string around the base of candles that will not fit into holders. Or, try slipping a small, fluted candy wrapper on the end of candle for a snug fit.

* Dry hand-washed sweaters easily. Place a child's safety gate over bathtub and lay the garment flat to dry.

* Group houseplants together in a red basket for a quick holiday touch. Decorate with tiny lights or ornaments.

* Need more ornaments for the tree but out of cash? Several yards of satin ribbon can yield bows to tie on the branches. Fill out the remainder of the tree with old jewelry, dried flowers and candy canes.

* String popcorn quickly. Spread fresh popcorn onto a cookie sheet and place in freezer for a few hours. The moisture will prevent the kernels from breaking apart when stringing.

In the garden

* Trim an outside tree with balls of suet and seed. Select a tree close to your kitchen window where you can watch the birds enjoy their feast.
