Edgewood turns back Atholton, 72-52

Junior forward Eric Briggs scored 20 points and grabbed 18 rebounds as No. 17 Edgewood (2-1) defeated visiting No. 16 Atholton, 72-52, in a boys basketball game yesterday.

Senior point guard Alfred McAllister added 18 points for the Rams (2-1), who led 31-23 at halftime.

Brian Benben led Atholton (2-1) with 15 points.

* Boys' Latin 64, Curley 63: Patrick Sullivan, a senior reserve center, banked in a three-pointer from the top of the circle in the final second to lift Boys' Latin (4-4) over visiting Curley. The Lakers had trailed by six points with 45 seconds left.

* Good Counsel 60, Mount St. Joseph 49: No. 11 Mount St. Joseph (3-3) fell behind 12-4 and couldn't catch host Good Counsel.

Richard Dent led Mount St. Joseph with 17 points.

* Southwestern 90, Douglass 53: Ernie Evans had 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists to lead No. 5 Southwestern (3-0) over visiting Douglass (0-3).

Sophomore Reginald Johnson had 15 points and three assists and Haywood Eaddy contributed 12 points, five assists and three steals for Southwestern.

* Loyola 92, Spalding 49: Senior swingman Tim O'Hara scored a game-high 18 points as Loyola (3-0) routed host Spalding. Mike O'Neill scored 13 points for the Dons (3-1).

* Poly 69, Carver 55: Curtis Wills scored a game-high 16 points as Poly (2-2) topped host Carver (1-3).

Garland Ragler led Carver with 15 points.

* Gilman 94, Friends 73: Jimmy Fields scored a game-high 32 points as Gilman (5-2, 2-0) defeated Friends (1-4, 0-1) in an MSA Armstrong B Conference game for coach Tim Holley's 100th victory.

* City 53, Mervo 52: Senior Corey Simpson scored a game-high 15 points as City edged visiting Mervo.

* Northern 107, Edmonson 105, OT: Kizar Alford's free throw with three seconds left lifted Northern (2-2) over Edmonson (2-1) in overtime. Alford scored 22 points and had eight assists.

* Severn 73, St. Mary's 47: Severn ran out to a 20-5 first-quarter lead as the No. 19 Admirals (6-2) cruised past visiting St. Mary's.

Alhamisi Simms led Severn with 14 points.

* Thomas Johnson 44, Howard 36: Senior guard Javier Michaux scored a game-high 21 points but Howard (0-3) could not overtake visiting Thomas Johnson.

* Mount Hebron 73, St. Paul's 54: Junior guard Kurtis Jestes scored 17 points to lead Mount Hebron (3-0) past St. Paul's (4-3) in a non-league game.

* Towson 75, Patapsco 70: Senior forward Greg Jones scored 27 points to push Towson past visiting Patapsco. Senior forward Lee Murray had 16 points and senior guard Chris Talmisano added 15.

* Greater Grace 80, Mount Carmel 72: Junior forward Peter Scibelli had 20 points and 17 rebounds to lead host Greater Grace.

Senior forward Joel Brown added 19 points and 13 rebounds and junior guard Ben Kirby chipped in 17 points for Greater Grace (4-2).

Mount Carmel's John Reina scored 24 points and Mike St. Rose added 23.

* Lutheran 51, Park 46: Joel Davis and Damian Valentine each scored 12 points, leading Lutheran (1-2, 1-0) past Park (3-2, 1-1) in a MSA C Conference game.

Girls basketball

* Western 94, Southwestern 18: Junior guard Chanel Wright scored 18 points to lead top-ranked Western over host Southwestern. Wright had seven rebounds and six steals.

Junior guards Tesha Tinsley and Kim Smith scored 16 points for Doves (3-0). Junior center Danielle Davis scored 14 for Western.

* Lake Clifton 76, Edmondson 25: Celena Faline scored 12 points and Toakowa Gardner added 11 as No. 3 Lake Clifton (4-0) routed visiting Edmondson. The Lakers built a 33-point halftime lead.

* Towson 66, North Harford 50: Jessica Owens scored 16 points and Sarah Weaver added 14, leading No. 10 Towson (2-0) past visiting North Harford in a non-league game. Mickey Ramer scored 11 points for Towson.

* Walbrook 66, Mervo 47: Junior guard Dashawn Coleman had 29 points, shooting 10-for-13, to lead Walbrook over Mervo.

Junior forward Jamee Greenwood had 17 points and eight rebounds and sophomore center Danielle Turner had 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Warriors (1-2).

* Northwestern 55, City 22: Senior guard Darnetta Wilkins had team highs of 12 points and seven assists to lead No. 18 Northwestern over visiting City (1-2). Lakyesha Robinson had 12 rebounds and two blocked shots for the Wildcats (3-0).

* Patterson 78, Southern-Baltimore 14: Visiting Patterson (1-1) routed Southern (0-3) behind seniors Maggie Owsianny (23 points, eight rebounds) and Jackie Wilkes (21 points).

Patterson freshman guard Anita Hyman had a school-record 12 assists and scored 16 points.

* Chapelgate 29, Perry Hall Christian 20: Freshman guard Sarah Kayser scored 10 points and had four rebounds to lead Chapelgate over host Perry Hall Christian.

Freshman center Angela Lee had eight points and 14 rebounds and forward Ronesa Wiggs had seven points and 13 rebounds for Chapelgate (2-2).

Sophomores Heather Desch and Maia Heilman each scored six for the Gators (1-1).

* Hereford 51, Patapsco 47, OT: Melinda Sawyer scored 21 points as Hereford beat Patapsco (2-2).
