Santa St. Clair to lead BRRC's jog

RUNNING

Although most runners aren't discriminating about their running, they are more so when it comes to jogging.

That's one reason the Baltimore Road Runners Club's Santa Sack Race fits so well into the season.

Come Saturday at Lake Montebello, Santa -- a k a Bailey St. Clair, longtime marathoner and BRRC ambassador of goodwill -- leads a pack of elves, reindeer, parents, children, strollers and other hangers-on -- around the lake's 1.35-mile loop for a fun-filled jog.

After the 9 a.m. race, Santa passes out gifts to the children; more serious runners line up for the club's accompanying 6-miler that follows the sack race.

"Santa has a lot of trouble doing the 1.35 miles," St. Clair, 54, says with the hint of a laugh. "It gets hot under there."

Actually, St. Clair is fortunate to be running at all. Last winter, he tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left leg and spent several months rehabilitating them at Kernan Hospital.

"Santa's glad to be running again," St. Clair says.

Briefly

Runners looking to get a jump on their late-winter, early-spring schedules might want to consider the Reservoir Rollercoaster 5- and 8-Mile Races, March 20 on Gunpowder Road in northwestern Baltimore County. Race director John Roemer IV says: "My father held several races in northwestern Baltimore County over a decade ago, and I think it's been long enough for memories to fade about how hilly it is here."
