Man pleads guilty in traffic death

A Bowie man pleaded guilty in Anne Arundel Circuit Court yesterday to causing an accident in May in Gambrills that killed a 76-year-old Crofton woman.

Alfredo R. Martinez, 47, of the 8200 block of Quill Point Drive, pleaded guilty to homicide by motor vehicle while intoxicated before Judge Raymond G. Thieme Jr.

According to court records, Martinez was driving his 1984 Datsun 200SX east on Defense Highway about 5 p.m. May 27 when his car crossed the center line. He sideswiped a truck and struck head-on the 1988 Dodge Aries being driven west by Dorothy Uhl of the 1700 block of Aberdeen Circle, police said.

Mrs. Uhl was flown by state police helicopter to Prince George's General Hospital, where she died about five hours later.

Martinez was treated for minor injuries at Anne Arundel General Hospital. Court records show he had a blood alcohol content of .13 percent shortly after the accident, well above the state standard of .10 percent for driving while intoxicated.

Judge Thieme set sentencing for Feb. 11.

Assistant State's Attorney M. Virginia Miles said Martinez could face up to five years in prison but that she probably will ask Judge Thieme to stay within the state sentencing guidelines, which recommend a term of up to three years.
